How To Become A Foster Carer

Foster carers are urgently needed, and each new fostering household can mean one more child living in a supportive family instead of uncertain arrangements.
Fostering can be challenging, but many carers describe it as one of the most meaningful things they’ve ever done — and that they wish they’d started earlier.
Deciding to become a foster carer is a big step, but if you feel that spark to open your home and heart to a child, the best next step is to find out more.
Start with a conversation
Reach out to a fostering service (either your local authority or an independent agency) and have a conversation. Ask questions, share your hopes and worries, and learn what fostering could mean for you.
There’s no pressure or commitment just by enquiring — even if you’re only curious, getting in touch can help you decide if this is right for you.
What happens next
While every journey is a little different, the process often includes:
An initial chat and information pack
A home visit and deeper conversation about your household
Checks and references (to keep children safe)
Assessment and preparation training
Approval and matching to the right child/young person

You won’t be doing this alone
You’ll be supported at every stage — from training before a child arrives, to supervision and guidance once you’re caring for a child.
You’ll also become part of a wider community of carers and professionals dedicated to helping children.

Questions to ask before you apply
What training and preparation will I receive?
What out-of-hours support is available?
How does matching work and how are placements supported?
What allowances are paid and what do they cover?
What ongoing learning and development is available?
